Daniel Chapter 8 - Transcription of Video Nine

Part Two of the Vision (cont.)

1. And she grew exceedingly unto the negev and unto the east, and unto the gazelle. And she grew until the host of the heavens, and she cast down earthward from the host and from the stars, and she trampled them underfoot. 1. ותגדל-יתר אל-הנגב ואל-המזרח ואל-הצבי ותגדל עד-צבא השמים ותפל ארצה מן-הצבא ומן-הכוכבים ותרמסם
  2. And until the prince of the host he expanded. And from him, he lifted away the continual. And the place of preparation of his holy place will be cast down. And a host she will be given upon the continual by transgression. 2. ועד שר-הצבא הגדיל וממנו הרים התמיד והשלך מכון מקדשו וצבא תנתן על-התמיד בפשע
3. And she cast truth earthward. And she will do. And she will succeed. 3. ותשלך אמת ארצה ועשתה והצליחה

Returning now to the main chiasm, to the third and last part specifically, the focus moves away from the man who came out of the horn, back to the horn herself. This is shown by the fact that all verbs are feminine. The last verb of the previous part was also feminine, however that verb was in the future tense and was passive. To show that a new part of the chiasm has begun, Daniel made the first verb in the past tense and active.

This third part of the chiasm is the pair of the first and is therefore giving more information about the horn’s activities recorded there. To review, the horn grew to the Negev, to the East, and to the Gazelle. She then grew unto the heavens, and lastly from the heavens she cast down earthward from both star and host.

The third part of the chiasm opens with the horn casting truth earthward, matching her last act in the first part. To cast truth earthward suggests that the horn has absolutely no regard for it, that she will cast down earthward from star and host, but then lie and deny she did it. However that it was the horn that went to the heavens, is confirmed by Daniel, because he wrote, “and she will do”. And as for her conquests, Daniel stated, that she will be successful.

Thus to summarize this part of the vision. The first chiasm introduces three characters, an animal which symbolizes a kingdom, one of the animal’s horn which is the dominant horn, and this symbolizes a kingship of the kingdom, a finally a man, who comes out of the dominant horn. The second chiasm begins by detailing the horn’s activities. She invades three lands, goes into space, and from there casts down earthward from star and host. All during this time, the animal to which the horn belongs does nothing. As for the man, he becomes powerful like another in the kingdom, the prince of the host, and then overthrows him thereby becoming king of the kingdom.

What is not made clear is how the activities of the man fit in with those of the horn. Does the horn first do all that she does, and then afterward the man does what he does? That is hard to say. If the gazelle symbolizes the horn’s own homeland, then when the horn grows there, that would seem to be the most likely time for the man to overthrow the prince of the host, since this man comes out of the horn. In any case, I should think it likely that the horn would first carry out some of her activities before the man overthrows the prince of the host, in order to alert an observer of events as to the possibility of this vision being fulfilled. The act of the horn growing to the Negev and to the lands east of Shushan are the obvious signs to watch for, as these lands are clearly identifiable from information given in the vision.

It should also be pointed out that Daniel’s description of the horn’s activities could be slightly misleading. A country that has the ability to travel in space could also have the ability to fight a war on several fronts. So rather than growing unto those three lands one after the other, and then unto the host of heavens, the horn could well grow to some of these places at the same time.
